It's Finally Starting to Emerge

We've been waiting patiently these last few months and FINALLY Sophie's first tooth has broken the surface!

I was feeding her a bottle this morning and decided to run my finger over her gums. To my surprise I felt something sharp and when I looked, I could see it! Both Ricky and I started clapping and woo-hooing her. She was just a smiling like "what are ya'll so happy for?" I'm so excited for all these little milestones that are coming up, but at the same time my baby is growing so fast!

Last night Sophie was on her tummy (she loves the rug in the living room) and she was moving around in a circle. She's starting to like being on her tummy again (not for long periods of time) so maybe this will motivate her to get on her knees and get moving!! I know I should watch what a wish for but I think it'll be neat for her to crawl around. I say that now......

Race Results

So I did my very first 10k this past weekend at the Riverfront Race Festival in N. Charleston. This was the inaugural race for the Charleston Marathon and it was very well organized. I was impressed. The had a 5k, 10k and 1/2 marathon (next year they're adding a marathon to the event). I had 2 goals for this race: (1) Run the entire 6.2 miles without walking, and (2) finish in an hour.

I am proud to say that I achieved both my goals. I ran the whole time and my chip time was 59:56! Just shy of 1 hour. I am very proud of myself and this gives me great confidence going forward. I'll be doing the 5k Feb. 6th. I would like to come in under 30 minutes so I've already been training for that. Yesterday I did a 5k on the treadmill in 28:45.

As promised, here are some pictures of Sophie. She's doing the cutest thing now. Whenever one of her little toys plays music, she'll bob up and down (dancing baby style). We get a kick out of it! In the first picture Sophie thought it would be fun to "eat" my cell phone.... after oatmeal.

2 Days till 10k

In two days I'll be running my first 10k! According to the forecast it won't be as cold as it's been BUT there is a chance of rain!! I think it's not supposed to rain till the afternoon so my fingers are crossed that it can hold out till the end of the race.

This past weekend I turned it up a notch. I ran 6 miles on the treadmill Saturday (ugh, treadmill is no fun for long runs) and then ran on a trail near our house with Pam and Nikki. We did 7 miles!! I did NOT get another blister (yay!) but my knees were SORE!! I felt like an 80 year old woman hobbling around the next day. Luckily by Tuesday my knees felt great and I ran 3 miles this morning with no problem (well I was a little stiff starting out but about 12 minutes in I felt like a rock star). Did a little weight training as well, nothing too strenuous. Tomorrow, provided I can get up again, I'll do some easy cross training (more than likely the elliptical).

So the original plan was to do the Kiawah Half Marathon this year, that's in December. But I think Pam and I have talked about doing one sooner since we've made it to the half way point. There's a half marathon in Charlotte in April. I think we can do it but we're still up in the air.

Up and coming runs:

Save the Light 5k - Feb. 6th
Flower Town Festival - ??? Sometime in March
Cooper River Bridge 10k - March 27th

Looking forward to warmer weather and more running outside (maybe even taking Sophie out some). It's been so cold here lately (well cold for the South).

7 Months Old

Yesterday Sophie turned 7 months old! Here are a few updates:

- No teeth yet, but she's working on them. It's hard to really tell what's going on in that mouth because she's very adamant about me NOT putting ANYTHING in her mouth, let alone my fingers. But every once in a while she'll want to chew on my finger. I feel a bump or 2, but nothing breaking the surface. They're there, right under the surface, you can see them but they just won't break through yet. Very soon!!

- Sitting up like a champ. That's all that Sophie wants to do is sit up and play. No more tummy for her, she could care less. Wants to be sitting up like a big girl. Although I try to put her on her tummy, she hates it at this point. When she falls over or gets herself on her tummy, I'm trying to let her "work it out." She can push up on her hands really well and even in the sitting position she'll lunge forward like she's ready to take off but just isn't to that point yet. I try to put her toys just a tad out of reach. Sometimes she sits and stares at them like "hmmm... now how am I going to get that?" I think in the next month or so we're going to see some progress in this area. She watches all the kids at daycare like a hawk. She's a very observant little girl.

- Moving onto 2nd foods. This weekend we're going to be moving Sophie to the 2nd foods. She's eating like a champ, has even come to an understanding with Peas. She'll eat them, but doesn't mean she has to be happy about it :)

- Ms. Personality. Sophie's personality is starting to shine through. She's generally a very happy baby. Now we are at the point where if I take something from her (like the remote control or my cell phone) she gets MAD. It's funny but at the same time I always hate to see her upset.

I'll be posting some pictures this weekend, I have a bunch I've taken but haven't gotten a chance to download them. She's growing so fast!

Training Update

T minus 9 days till the Riverfront Race Festival (event is Saturday January 16th). I'm starting to get a little nervous and excited to see how my training efforts have paid off. I have no big goals set, not really looking at time this go around. I mainly just want to run the entire 6.2 miles with out stopping.

On the downside it's been COLD this past week and looks like the cold weather will continue through the weekend and into next. Accuweather shows rain for the 16th but I know that's so far ahead and it could change so I'm not thinking about it yet.

On the upside, my running has gotten so much better in the last 2 weeks. After we ran the bridge, it gave me a huge confidence booster. Saturday I ran 6 miles on the treadmill! Woo hoo! I felt great and wasn't even that sore later in the day. The only thing I need to watch out for is my knees. Sometimes they get a little sore when I run, but I'm trying to give myself some time to recover in between runs. I continue to strength train and cross train on days that I don't run (for cross training I do the elliptical). The problem that I'm "running" into (he he) is that I get recurring blisters on my right foot, the instep. Same spot. I think that the longer I run, my form starts to waiver and then I'm stepping wrong and rubbing my foot against my shoe. That's the only area where I get the blister. I need to google this and see what I can do.

After two days of Sophie not sleeping well, and waking up throughout the night, she finally slept awesome last night so I made it to the gym this morning. I ran 4.6 miles and did some weights. Tomorrow, provided that Sophie sleeps well again, I will shoot for 5 miles. Pam and I are tackling the Cooper River Bridge again Sunday (in the cold) but this will help us for the 16th.

Turkey Sausage Pasta Recipe

Tonight I made the following recipe that I found on one of my favorite cooking blogs (Good Things Catered). It's got a little bit of a spicy kick and nice to have a pasta dish that's not chicken or beef. Ricky approved, but seriously, it was really tasty and had good flavor.

Ingredients:
2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves
1 lb. smoked lean turkey sausage, sliced
1/4 tsp chili flakes or red pepper flakes (I used red pepper flakes)
3 cloves garlic, diced finely
1/4 c. low sodium chicken stock
14.5 oz can diced tomatoes in juice
14/5 oz can tomato sauce
1 Tbsp. fresh oregano leaves, torn
3 c. fresh spinach
1 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
1 box penne pasta (or pasta of choice)
1/2 c. flat leaf parsley
Parmigiano cheese

Directions:
- In large stock pot over high heat, bring water to boil and cook pasta according to package.
- Meanwhile, in large pan over medium heat, add oil and bring up to almost smoking.
- Add chopped onion, stirring occasionally, until beginning to brown (almost 10 minutes).
- Add thyme and sliced sausage and cook, stirring occasionally until beginning to brown (about 5 minutes).
- Add chili flakes and garlic and cook, while stirring, until fragrant (about 1 minute).
- De glaze the pan with chicken stock, scraping up browned bits from bottom of pan.
- Add diced tomatoes and tomato sauce, stirring to combine well.
- Add oregano, spinach, and balsamic vinegar and bring to boil.
- When pasta is finished cooking, drain well and place into pan with tomato sauce.
- Toss and remove from heat.
- Let cook slightly, mix well, and garnish.
- Serve and enjoy!

Welcome 2010!

Happy New Year everyone! We rang in the new year with our friends Phillip, Rachael, and their daughter Kinsey. Kinsey and Sophie got to "hang out" for an hour before it was bed time. Then the adults hung out and lord and behold, I made it till midnight! We popped the cork of some champagne and then hit the sack. It was a fun night among friends!
